It would be presumptuous to offer advice
for situations which are intolerable and where only help by counselors
of friends will tide over the crisis. There are, however, ways of
diminishing the effects of stress if you take a long look at yourself
and take action before cracking point:
-
To know well how much of arousal you can
adapt. Have the courage to say 'no' when things are too much. Identify
the fatigue and take measures to treat it.
-
Make a change to living and lifestyle.
Get away from the situation that causes the stress. This may mean
changing your job, moving house, leaving home. This may not solve
the real problem.
-
Habituation. Become accustomed to
it by dealing with the stressful condition regularly.
-
Keep fit and Exercise. When you find
yourself strong and healthy, once nourishment, workout and sleep at
night are appropriate, it happens to be incredibly easier to deal with
stress.
-
Hobbies and leisure pursuits are
distractions and take the mind off immediate problems. Creative
use of leisure time is important.
-
Help others. Man is a social animal
and needs the support of others. If we can earn and receive the
gratitude of other people, and equally important are able to show
gratitude to them, we could reveal difficulties and deal with stress
without problems .
-
Learn to relax. Psychologists and
physiologists have shown that a state of muscle relaxation is
incompatible with that of anxiety. It is muscle tension which first
signals 'Danger' to the brain. By relaxing muscles the message is
received that all is well. Muscle relaxation can be an effective
way of lowering arousal.
