What Is Premenstrual Tension?

The premenstrual syndrome as the world's commonest disease. There are many women who, as a result of an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone, combined with over-arousal, tension and fatigue suffer from a regularly occurring group of symptoms. For up to eight days each month, some women experience increased irritability, depression, fatigue and clumsiness, mainly in the few days before the periods begin and perhaps for a day or two after. It has been shown that:

  • There is an increased risk of accidents at this time and there is an associated higher crime rate amongst women.

  • There may also be physical changes. Water retention causes an increase in weight and the woman may feel bloated.

  • There may be joint pains, backache and and an increase in the incidence of migraine and headaches.

Premenstrual Tension Diagnosis

There is medical help available for premenstrual tension, but as with all hormonal disorders, at times of stress the symptoms increase in severity. It is for this reason that relaxation techniques have helped those women who do not which to accept hormone treatment and who do not feel that tranquillizers taken for a long time are the answer to the complication of the menstrual cycle.
