During the spasms the pain is usually
eased by curling up and hugging a hot water bottle, but in the long run
relaxation has been found to be more effective, especially on occasions
when the girl is unable to get to bed.
-
She should relax fully and breathe slowly
during the first part of the spasm, letting her abdominal muscles relax
and rise as she does so. As the wave reaches its height she
should breathe a little more quickly and more shallowly, then slowly
again as the pain dies away.
-
Self massage also helps. The flat
of the hand move backward and forwards across the abdomen, or if the
pain is more severe in the back the hand moves up and down the lower
part of the spine.
