Can Stress Cause Painful Menstruation Periods? |

Some adolescents and young women suffer spasmodic pain at the beginning of each period. Whereas premenstrual tension is said to be associated with high levels of estrogen, in relation to progesterone, spasmodic dysmenorrhoea (painful menstruation periods) is accompanied by high levels of progesterone. So, those who have the one disorder are unlikely to have the other.
Painful Menstruation Periods Caused By StressUsually the first periods of menstruation are painless. This is before ovulation has occurred but, after that, each period may be accompanied by cram-like pains in the lower abdomen of sometimes along the inner sides of the thighs. During the spasms, which are not continuous but come in waves, the pain my be severe enough to cause fainting, vomiting and extreme pallor. They resemble labor pains.
In severe cases medical help will be necessary but although the basic cause may be hormonal it is known that stress and high levels of arousal are contributory causes.
