Relaxation Technique

The technique of relaxation is presented here in a series of steps which require practice. It is important that you complete the entire course of instruction.  A practice period should consist of at least forty-five minutes or one hour in seclusion. Make sure you are not disturbed. You may devote one or two periods a day to practice, if possible, setting aside the same times each day for this purpose.

Select a quiet room which contains a bed or couch. A thin pillow is recommended to support the head. The room does not necessarily have to be dark. The relaxation training involves relaxing flat on your back. However, when you go to sleep or take a nap, assume any position to which you are accustomed.

During practice, do not fold your hands or cross the legs. Each arm in its entire length should rest several inches from the sides of the body.

Also during practice, whenever the instructions specify that the eyes be closed, you should remember not to shut the eyes quickly or abruptly, but, instead, gradually close the eyelids lightly, permitting about three minutes to elapse before you shut them completely. Then you are to keep your eyes closed for the entire practice session. This is effective in bringing about a more gradual letdown.

At this point it is also necessary to clarify the time element in practice periods.  You will be instructed to allot a certain specified time to the various aspects of the technique. Since watching a timepiece interferes with the process of relaxation, exact timing is not essential. You need only concern yourself with an estimate of the timing to the best of your ability, and you will still obtain the desired results.
